A Dream Come True

Technically the contract for my Torquere Press novel "A Dream Come True" expires today. I imagine, it'll still be available through the end of the month since that seems to have been the pattern for the short stories as they expired, but yeah, technically the first edition of that story is no longer available for sale. A second edition will be forthcoming, but not until July or later. Below is a copy/paste of info I posted to a thread in the M/M readers group on Goodreads a few weeks ago. It'll answer a few questions about when/how/where you can expect to see the second edition of "A Dream Come True," as well as the other stories in the Dream Series, etc.

What's new? Well, as for actually new-new...nothing, but stuff is still happening. Old contracts are expiring, and I'm freshening up old stories to varying degrees with revisions, additions and reedits. I'm uploading second editions directly to distributors.

Currently second editions of all ten of my short stories are available individually at All Romance Ebooks, 1 Place for Romance, Amazon Kindle, Smashwords, and several others via Smashwords.

The first two stories in the Dream Series will be expiring this year in February and July. I already have the rights to the third story in the series, so after my Another Dream contract expires in July I'll release heavily reworked second editions of the three stories together in a single volume ("Dreams"?).

Cultivating Love expires in June (assuming the contract doesn't get renewed). For the second edition, other than correcting a typo I've noticed I'm thinking of inserting a couple scenes from an additional point of view (Stan) to take care of a couple problems: to clear up the question of his motivations, and to slow down the pace of the action toward the end of the book.

There are a couple reasons I want to put the three stories of the Dream series together in a single volume. One, so new readers will read them in order. While this isn't critical, it is helpful. The other reason is the first two stories are very short novels--some publishers might even have called them novellas--and the third story is a novelette. Together they are a good length that I can consider print (through Createspace?) as an option in addition to re-release as an ebook. For this reason I'm also thinking of combining Cultivating Love's second edition with all the short stories ("Cultivating Love and Other Stories"?) and ditching the sale of the individual short stories. So, if things go as planned, sometime in the second half of the year all my stuff will be available in just two volumes in your choice of ebook or print.

An Excerpt

Blake Renner breathed in the crisp autumn air and took a few practice swings before addressing the ball he'd placed on the tee. He was a straggler at the Towering Pines Golf Course and was killing time at the driving range, hoping to hear a page calling for him to join a threesome.

He'd awoken with a desire to spend the day outdoors. He loved the blaze of colors in the trees and the freshness of the air, so driving out to the golf course had been a no-brainer. None of his friends liked to golf so he often found himself showing up at the course, hoping to be able to join a group that showed up short a player. He usually managed to get in after a brief wait.

He stepped up to the tee and swung his driver, connecting solidly with the ball. It landed about two hundred and fifty yards out. Not bad. He'd hooked it slightly, though. He reached into the bucket and placed another ball on the tee.

After going through about ten balls with his driver, he traded his club for the three wood. He practiced a while with that then reached for his seven iron, but didn't get the chance to use it.

"Jacobson threesome on deck for number one tee," announced the starter over the loudspeaker. "Renner single join Jacobson threesome on tee number one."

Sweet. He was in. Blake picked up his golf bag and hiked toward the first tee. He spotted the trio on deck and walked in their direction. As he approached, one of the men turned to look at him.

Blake sucked in his breath and stutter stepped as he recognized the man. It was Frank Miller, the Chief Financial Officer at Jensen's Natural Beverages. Blake had been spotted so it was too late to remove his Gay Pride earring before joining the threesome. Not knowing whether or not the higher ups at JNB had any personal prejudices, it had just seemed better to fly under the radar regarding his sexuality at work.

Mr. Miller had a reputation for having unrealistic standards and was said to be cutthroat when dealing with underlings. Thankfully Blake didn't answer to him, and in fact, never had to personally deal with the man.

Maybe Mr. Miller wouldn't recognize him as a fellow employee at JNB. It was a large company, and their scopes of work didn't bring them into direct contact with each other. Hell, if coworkers hadn't pointed Mr. Miller out in the building's cafeteria, Blake wouldn't have recognized him, so it didn't seem like a completely unreasonable hope.

Apparently it was, though, because the look in Mr. Miller's eyes made it clear that he recognized Blake at least on some level. Just how well Mr. Miller knew him was clarified as Blake drew closer.

"Blake Renner." Mr. Miller smiled and held out his hand. "Are you as good at playing golf as you are at landing new contracts?"

So much for hoping Mr. Miller wouldn't even recognize him as a random employee of the company. The man fucking knew exactly who he was.

Graeme watched from across the room as Brandt danced slowly with a nice-looking man decked out in a purple, crushed-velvet pimp costume. There were some wild costumes at the Halloween dance party tonight and Brandt was looking extra hot in a tight sailor boy costume.

Graeme didn't remember seeing the man Brandt was with before, but he'd taken notice of the guy tonight. He'd watched the purple pimp checking out Brandt and finally working up the nerve to approach Brandt for a dance. The man was clearly on the prowl for a hookup, and if there was one thing Graeme wanted tonight, it was for Brandt to finally get laid again. Brandt really needed to move on with his life.

The man had been polite and pleasant. He seemed like a nice guy. Not at all predatory -- pimp costume notwithstanding. He'd be a good choice for Brandt tonight. They looked good together.

It had been just over a year since Graeme had left Brandt, and it had been a very hard year on Brandt. Hell, it had been hard on both of them, and if Graeme could fix it, he would, but he didn't know how.

Brandt had been doing pretty well these past few months, but he still wasn't getting out like he should. Graeme was glad to see that their friends, Jason and John, had been able to convince Brandt to get out of the house to attend this party with them.

As Graeme watched the couple dance, the purple pimp started putting moves on Brandt, squeezing Brandt's ass and pressing their hips together. Brandt reacted quickly, placing both hands squarely on the man's chest and heaving. The man let go immediately.

Shaking his head, Graeme had to stop himself from crossing the floor to try to talk some sense into Brandt. Wouldn't do any good, anyway. Damn it, Brandt. He seemed like a decent guy. Why didn't you go with it?

The song ended and Brandt stalked to the edge of the dance floor, looking wretched. The purple pimp watched him go, looking confused as hell. Fuck.

Graeme moved closer to Brandt, wanting to be near former lover. He desperately wished there was something, anything, he could do to help Brandt, but what? He'd already tried everything he could think of.

Jason and John came off the dance floor, looking sexy in their matching pirate costumes. Their brows were knit as they approached Brandt. Brandt got a hug from John first, then Jason.

Jason said, "Brandt, you know we love you, right?"

Brandt just nodded his head and stared at the ground.

Jason looked at John for help, and John took over. "Brandt, honey, we know how much you loved Graeme, and I know this probably sounds trite, but it's time to move on. It's been over a year. Please, let us help you, hon."

"Love, John, not 'loved.' I love him, now and forever," was Brandt's forlorn reply. The look of hopelessness on Brandt's face was distressing.

Fuck. Graeme would love Brandt forever and it broke his heart, seeing Brandt as miserable as he'd been this past year. Graeme couldn't stop himself from reaching out to Brandt. "I love you, too, sweetheart, now and forever, but they're right. I need you to be happy again. Please."

Brandt looked up sharply. He spun around and looked through Graeme, seeing the crowd behind him.

Brandt hadn't actually heard him, had he? No, Graeme had spoken to Brandt so many times in the past year, and Brandt had never heard him.

An Excerpt…

“Ed?” Joe’s voice wasn’t much more than a whisper, close to his ear.

Ed groaned. “What”

“Hey, I’m leaving. Sorry, I didn’t want to go without saying good-bye.”

Ed’s eyes flashed open. “Shit.” He sat up. “What time is it?”

“Uh, three o’clock. Sorry, I want to get there pretty early. Got a lot to do.”

Ed stood up. Jesus. No wonder it was so pitch dark. “Okay.” His brain was still foggy. He couldn’t think of the right words he knew he wanted to say. Damn, it would be days before he’d see Joe again. Shit, maybe a week. Or more.

He felt Joe’s hands on his shoulders, then Joe’s lips on his own. The kiss was tender and full of longing. Not wanting to let him go, Ed put his arms around Joe’s waist. The kiss broke way too soon. “Don’t go,” Ed whispered before his sluggish brain could catch up with his mouth. Shit.

Joe didn’t laugh, though, or even grin. Instead, he brought one hand up to cup Ed’s face before giving him a soft kiss. “I have to. Follow soon, Ed.”

“I will.”

“Promise?” Joe’s voice was husky.

Ed nodded. With his heart heavy, he knew he’d choke on any words he tried to speak.

Joe pulled back, and Ed let him go. Ed walked with him to the door. “Call me.”

Joe stared into his eyes before giving him one last quick kiss. “Every day.”

Ed worked up a little smile. Joe winked and turned to walk out to Ed’s little Escort. That was classic Joe -- practical and hardworking, with barely a hint of sentiment. And Ed missed him already. In less than a minute, Joe was out of sight. Ed slowly shut the door and leaned his forehead against the smooth wood. He felt empty. Cold and empty, and suddenly overwhelmed with emotion. He shuddered, fighting a tear that threatened to break free.

To hell with it. There were no witnesses, so he gave in and let go. Wet trails streamed down his face. Wondering how or when it had come to this, he bit his lip, salty with tears, and snuffled. What were they getting themselves into? This was way past the level where either of them could just walk away at the drop of a hat if they had a big argument. But that was good, wasn’t it? Joe had agreed they were partners and had been over-the-moon happy looking over the farm. If nothing else, he had Joe hooked with the farm.

His head ached, and he didn’t want to think about it anymore. He scrubbed his face with the palm of his hands and padded back to his lonely bed.

* * * * *

All was quiet and peaceful on the farm when Joe pulled to a stop behind the house. He wanted to think about anything but Ed and the look on Ed’s face when he’d left home. Worse yet, he didn’t want to confront his own feelings as he’d pulled out of the driveway and fully grasped the knowledge that it would be days before he’d see Ed again.

He missed Ed acutely. Hell, he’d rather bottom for Ed every day for a week than live apart for a week. Joe smiled ruefully to himself. That was a thought he’d take to the grave with him. That and the fact he’d actually had to fight back tears as each minute had taken him farther away from Ed.

He tossed his bags in the house, grabbed a sandwich and some Gatorade, and headed out to the barn. He needed to take care of the horses and let them out to exercise in the pen. The dogs greeted him as he approached. He put out some food and fresh water for them before turning to the horses. He let them loose in the pen, filled their water trough, and gave them their morning ration of hay and oats. In the machine shed, he hooked the swather up behind the large tractor and headed out to the alfalfa field.

Amazon Kindle Sales Woot for Born to Be Wild

This makes me particularly happy because Born to Be Wild is just an itty bitty short story, and those don't traditionally sell particularly well in comparison to longer works. Also, it's been out since early October of last year, and sales generally drop quite a bit after the first month.

What do you think the appeal is for this particular short story compared to my other second edition re-releases? The title? The cover? The blurb? I'm not sure which one(s), but I know I'd like to repeat the attraction when I put out the second editions of Nevermore (in July) and The Straggler (in November).

Updates: Dreaming of You & Cow Pie Bingo

It seems like forever since I've made any kind of an update. There really isn't too much going on for me, writing-wise, though. I've got a few things happening right now that I'll run down for you here.

		The third story in my Dream series, Dreaming of You (following A Dream Come True and Another Dream), is now out at eXcessica Publishing, and through them, is now available at All Romance eBooks and Fictionwise. Those who've been following along, either here or on my website, know this novelette has actually been available at a few distributors (Lulu, Smashwords, 1 Romance Ebooks, Barnes and Noble, Amazon Kindle) since mid-September of last year. eXcessica is a bit different from other publishers in that it is a coop, and their contracts are not exclusive, meaning I could self-publish it to the aforementioned ahead of the more widespread eXcessica/ARe/FW release. BLURB: Trevor's upset when the man he's been chasing for years chooses another. He'd come to terms with losing Marty, but his hopes had been recently renewed and freshly dashed. While he's trying to drown his sorrows, the man he considers to be the cause of his distress approaches him. When Quinn startles him with an insightful revelation, will Trevor be able to put aside their differences and give love another chance? For those not familiar with this series, it should be noted that the stories, while related, are not strictly sequels and stand alone fine. This last story will have more meaning to someone who has read Another Dream first, but it's not necessary to be able to follow along. Dreaming of You picks up the day after a certain bathroom scene toward the end of Another Dream, and does include the protagonists from that story, but feature two characters who had fairly minor parts and is told entirely from the point of view of one of these two characters (Trevor).
		Cow Pie Bingo was my very first publication, and as such, has always held a special place in my heart. The second edition will be out on (or very near) April 10, when its current contract expires. I will post the buy-links when I have them. As I've mentioned before with my previous short story second editions, I will make this edition available for free to anyone who previously purchased the first edition. I guess I don't really know how to go about this other than by the honor system. If you've previously purchased any of my short story first editions, and you'd like me to send you a copy of the second edition, please send me an email (addison.albright@gmail.com) with the stories you are requesting, and the format you'd like it in, and I'll get it out to you as soon as I read your request. Cow Pie Bingo has special meaning to me since it was my very first publication. Not the first thing I ever wrote (which is A Dream Come True, followed by Another Dream), but the first that made it to publication. I actually wrote this short story while in the middle of writing Another Dream, but finished Cow Pie Bingo first. The story itself in this second edition remains the same, although I've reworded much of it, added more insight into what's going through Evan's mind, and corrected some minor POV perspective issues.

Evan lets a co-worker talk him into working a kissing booth at a charity fair. Not quite sure what to expect, he certainly doesn't count on meeting Gary, or kissing the man, considering his past. I'm Back...

Hello everyone! Long time no see. :-D

Well, this past month has kicked my butt. Between the holidays, hubby home on vacation for 2 weeks, daughter home from grad school for 3 weeks (along with her 2 cats, making a total of 7 in the house at that time), and now I'm babysitting not 1, but 2 step-grandkids several days a week (a toddler and an infant). I also schlep my mom around one day a week, and have to clean house, etc., sometime, so not much has been accomplished on the computer since before the holidays (as you can see).

I guess that's not entirely true. I have discovered the dual addicting timesucks of Farmville and Vampire Wars via Facebook (gee, thanks for those invites, Reno Macleod), but those are at least mindless timesucks that can be done in 5 or 10 minute increments here and there. They don't require a block of time to concentrate, and that's what's been missing, so I can't really blame them for my absence and lack of getting caught up on rereleasing my expired stuff (let alone the associated updating of my website, the GLBT bookshelf, Blogger & LJ sidebars, LJ profile page, Slide & Flikr slideshows, Goodreads, LibraryThing...OMG the list! And that's not even counting blog and/or loop promo posts). Those things require somewhat longer blocks of time and the ability to concentrate my attention.

Anyway, I finally got caught up. I don't think I ever posted about the release of the second (new and improved) edition of Moving Along (the sequel to Moving On), or the release of my second little collection of short stories, Some Like It Hot - Volume 2 (which includes Moving On, Moving Along, and Photo Shoot). Those came out back on December 20 at Smashwords, 1 Romance Ebooks, and Amazon Kindle. The other day I got the release of the second (new and improved) edition of Now and Forever up at those same sites. I've also updated all of the aforementioned places with the buy links for each. Yay and whew!

In keeping with my recent pattern of re-releasing my short stories at Smashwords, etc. as the TQ contracts expire, I will be uploading a second edition of Photo Shoot on (or about) November 29. I've had some more fun with Paint Shop Pro and created a custom cover for the short story. I'm particularly happy with this one. I think it captures the fun/light/humorous mood of the story, and Eddie's nervousness about the upcoming nude photo shoot he'd reluctantly agreed to, and I think/hope it's eye-catching and appealing. I included some elements from the story, such as the brick wall and the bright lighting that Eddie was a bit mortified to see. Here is the finished cover:

EXCERPT:

Graeme watched from across the room as Brandt danced slowly with a nice-looking man decked out in a purple, crushed-velvet pimp costume. There were some wild costumes at the Halloween dance party tonight and Brandt was looking extra hot in a tight sailor boy costume.

Graeme didn’t remember seeing the man Brandt was with before, but he’d taken notice of the guy tonight. He’d watched the purple pimp checking out Brandt and finally working up the nerve to approach Brandt for a dance. The man was clearly on the prowl for a hookup, and if there was one thing Graeme wanted tonight, it was for Brandt to finally get laid again. Brandt really needed to move on with his life.

The man had been polite and pleasant. He seemed like a nice guy. Not at all predatory -- pimp costume notwithstanding. He’d be a good choice for Brandt tonight. They looked good together.

It had been just over a year since Graeme had left Brandt, and it had been a very hard year on Brandt. Hell, it had been hard on both of them, and if Graeme could fix it, he would, but he didn’t know how.

Brandt had been doing pretty well these past few months, but he still wasn’t getting out like he should. Graeme was glad to see that their friends, Jason and John, had been able to convince Brandt to get out of the house to attend this party with them.

As Graeme watched the couple dance, the purple pimp started putting moves on Brandt, squeezing Brandt’s ass and pressing their hips together. Brandt reacted quickly, placing both hands squarely on the man’s chest and heaving. The man let go immediately.

Shaking his head, Graeme had to stop himself from crossing the floor to try to talk some sense into Brandt. Wouldn't do any good, anyway. Damn it, Brandt. He seemed like a decent guy. Why didn’t you go with it?

The song ended and Brandt stalked to the edge of the dance floor, looking wretched. The purple pimp watched him go, looking confused as hell. Fuck.

Graeme moved closer to Brandt, wanting to be near former lover. He desperately wished there was something, anything, he could do to help Brandt, but what? He'd already tried everything he could think of.

Jason and John came off the dance floor, looking sexy in their matching pirate costumes. Their brows were knit as they approached Brandt. Brandt got a hug from John first, then Jason.

Jason said, “Brandt, you know we love you, right?”

Brandt just nodded his head and stared at the ground.

Jason looked at John for help, and John took over. “Brandt, honey, we know how much you loved Graeme, and I know this probably sounds trite, but it’s time to move on. It’s been over a year. Please, let us help you, hon.”

“Love, John, not ‘loved.’ I love him, now and forever,” was Brandt’s forlorn reply. The look of hopelessness on Brandt’s face was distressing.

Fuck. Graeme would love Brandt forever and it broke his heart, seeing Brandt as miserable as he’d been this past year. Graeme couldn’t stop himself from reaching out to Brandt. “I love you, too, sweetheart, now and forever, but they’re right. I need you to be happy again. Please.”

Brandt looked up sharply. He spun around and looked through Graeme, seeing the crowd behind him.

Brandt hadn’t actually heard him, had he? No, Graeme had spoken to Brandt so many times in the past year, and Brandt had never heard him.

I always like Addison Albright's stories, and this one is no exception. It starts, "Blaine sat down on an empty barstool between a likely prospect and King-fucking-Kong." Cruising for a hook-up, preppy Blaine would never have considered a blue-collar working guy like George unless he was desperate. Sometimes desperation (and a Skinny Pirate) lead to surprising outcomes.

This has a laugh out loud hilarious introduction with great characters of a fussy corporate lawyer and a bear-like mechanic. The opening scene at the bar sets the fun and light tone that is carried through effortlessly. Their story was delightful and highly entertaining with a heavily romantic ending that is sure to please new and die hard fans alike.

An Excerpt

Blaine sat down on an empty barstool between a likely prospect and King-fucking-Kong. He cocked his head, summoning the bartender as he ran his freshly manicured hands over the textured cashmere of his Kilton pinstripe suit, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles.

"A Skinny Pirate, please."

The bartender quirked an eyebrow but otherwise kept his face expressionless. "Coming right up."

His peripheral vision picked up movement to his left. King Kong was looking him over. He turned his head to the right, ignoring the hairy behemoth, to check out his hopeful hookup for the night.

The man was maybe a couple inches taller than himself, casually dressed in freshly pressed khakis and a clean navy polo shirt. His dark wavy hair was neatly trimmed, and his hands, while not professionally manicured, were well maintained.

The man concentrated on a Screwdriver, studiously ignoring him, though. Fuck. The bartender placed the drink in front of him, and he slapped some bills on the bar.

"Why's that called a Skinny Pirate? Looks like rum and Coke to me."

Blaine sighed and turned to the muscle-bound hulk. "Because it's made with Captain Morgan rum and Diet Coke." He picked up his drink and spun on the stool to cast his eyes over the room. Nothing. No singles, anyway. The patrons all appeared to be part of a couple.

Kong turned on his seat and brought a domestic longneck up to his lips. The man was big and hairy—except for his bald head—but basically clean, albeit slightly rumpled, in jeans and a snug t-shirt. His goatee could use a trim and minute traces of grease stained his cuticles.

"Not much hope out there. I've already scoped the place."

Blaine glanced at the guy on his other side. Maybe there was still a chance.

"Preppy there's got someone that's going to be joining him." King Kong shrugged. "I already tried."

Shit. He took another look at King Kong. How bad did he really want to get laid tonight?

King Kong grinned. "Feelin' desperate, are ya?"

Fucker. Maybe not that bad.

King Kong actually wiggled his eyebrows. "I showered and everything."

Christ. The man was laughing at him. Sure he was picky, but he had a right to be, goddammit. He took a sip of his Skinny Pirate and cocked his head. "What's your name? Or should I just call you King Kong?"

The man's laughter reached his eyes. "That depends. You wanna be my Ann Darrow?"

I just have way too much fun creating book covers. I don't know if they're any good or not (it's hard for me to be objective), but I have a great time doing it anyway. To the left you'll see my latest creation. I think it's eye-catching and fits the story perfectly, so I hope y'all like it too. Somewhere in the next couple of days I'm going to be uploading my short story King Kong vs. The Skinny Pirate to Smashwords and Lulu.

King Kong vs. The Skinny Pirate was originally published (and is still available) at eXcessica in the "Like Magnets, We Attract" anthology, edited by Jaye Valentine. Information on the Magnets anthology, and its availability, can be found here on its GLBT Bookshelf page.

An Excerpt

Luke stepped into the crowded, smoky bar with Jake and Aaron. Neon signs hawking various brands of beer decorated the walls. They didn’t see any empty pool tables and wandered up to the bar for some longnecks.

Luke took a long draw on his beer and followed his buddies over to watch some pool. He saw a few Tigers uniforms among the players. He glanced around the room but didn’t notice Cato among them.

Fuck him anyway. Luke had given him two openings and the man had shot them both down. Fine, so he wasn’t Cato’s type -- not the end of the fucking world. He wasn’t stupid, and he wasn’t going to make a third play for the man, either.

So why couldn’t he stop thinking about the stuck-up little prick? Why did he keep reliving their shared moans back at the Ninth Street Arcade? The feel of Cato’s hands on him when he was doubled over, holding his forehead?

Why? Probably because of the potential he’d seen there. Cato seemed like a nice enough guy -- basically normal with a sense of humor -- and they at least had some shared interests since they both played in a softball league.

But, for all Luke knew Cato wasn’t even gay. Maybe Cato was bi, or bi-curious. The fact that he’d been in the adult arcade getting off watching gay sex videos wasn’t necessarily proof. Maybe he wasn’t single either. Luke hadn’t felt a need to visit the place while in a relationship, but that didn’t mean others wouldn’t.

Fuck him. He either wasn’t interested or wasn’t eligible. Either way, Luke needed to move on and quit thinking about the man.

Luke needed to figure out where he could meet an eligible man who was interested in more than a casual hookup for the night. He was looking for love in all the wrong places, just like the song.

Luke glanced at the silent jukebox and walked over to look at the selections. He smiled when he saw the Johnny Lee song was one of the options. He pulled three quarters out of his pocket, dropped them into the machine and made his selection.

An Excerpt

Roland used a long stick to arrange the hot coals in the ancient grill he and his friends kept on their back patio. He looked around the decrepit backyard. There were more bare spots than grassy spots and the metal shed in the back corner was more rust than anything else. He did enjoy the big, old, shady oak trees, though. He placed the grate back in place on the grill and reached for the package of brats.

He looked up when he heard a loud clanging crash coming from the YKB house. Fisher and Corey were dragging four metal trash cans around to the back of the house.

There was a vine-covered chain link fence separating the houses, but Roland could easily see over it. He watched the two pledges as he placed the brats on the hot grate.

They lined the cans up in a row and Fisher grabbed the coiled up garden hose while Corey picked up a bottle of dish soap and one of the scrub brushes.

Scrubbing out the trash cans? Man, Trey had a mean streak in him. Jesus, you couldn’t pay Roland enough money to pledge a fraternity. Although having a couple of willing slaves for three years after you'd put in your time as a freshman did hold a bit of appeal.

The sound of the hose powering into the metal cans was thunderous. Roland watched as Corey squeezed some of the dish soap onto his brush and reached inside the first can to start scrubbing it out while Fisher hosed out the other three.

What a nasty job. Poor Corey had his head all the way in the can as he scrubbed the bottom.

Roland was surprised when he saw Fisher dial the hose nozzle to “jet” and take aim at Corey’s ass. That was Trey’s idea of reserved? Oh, hell no, there was nothing at all reserved about Fisher. Roland almost laughed out loud when Corey squealed like Ned Beatty in Deliverance at the assault to his backside.

Fisher did laugh. His laughter was natural and untamed. Fisher fit right in with the YKB delinquents already. What was Trey thinking?

Roland watched as Corey grappled with Fisher for control of the hose. Something was up here, because Trey wasn’t that fucking stupid. Roland smelled a double cross. That much was obvious, but what was Trey’s game?

Were they planning to have Fisher throw an out of control snit when he saw the guys making out with each other all over the living room? Or maybe they were planning to have Fisher faint and cause a panic? Roland smiled to himself. Trey was good. He was pure evil genius. Roland wasn’t sure anymore that it was Corey’s idea, as Brad had suggested. That had been to throw them off track. This reeked of Trey.

Trey was a well known practical joker, and Roland was almost ashamed he hadn’t suspected anything. He’d simply thought the joke was on Fisher, but apparently it was supposed to be on himself and his housemates. Roland needed to figure out how to turn it around to be back on Trey and Fisher.

What's on your desk Wednesday...

My own little version of the "What's on your desk Wednesday" meme. No rules, just a photo and a little rambling. 'Cause I'm bored, I guess. I did get my WIP off the zip drive, so I could work on that, but I'm not in the mood.

So this is my desk. Now ordinarily, when my laptop isn't in the hands of the geeksquad (for the 3rd time since mid-August...but that's another story), my "desk" would more often be the kitchen table, or my lap as I sit in a recliner, but for now, this desk is where I'm at if I want to use a computer.

Where is this desk located, you ask? *sigh* It's in a closet. Okay, so it's a pretty darned big friggin' closet, with windows. But still, it's rather isolated from the rest of the house, which would actually be a good thing if I was in writing mode, I suppose.

Anyway, to answer the question "what's on your desk?", the answer is apparently not a whole lot. Now the shelves on the wall above the desk (and you can only see 2 of the 4)...that's a whole other ballgame. Plenty of crap up there. So, there you are, a glimpse of my space.

I got to thinking about the various heat ratings assigned to our books and thought I’d check to see what rating had been assigned to Another Dream at Torquere Books. I knew that A Dream Come True (the first book in my "Dream" series) had been assigned a "Chile" pepper rating, and I figured the two books had fairly similar levels of heat so I thought I might find Another Dream there too. Turns out Another Dream rated a "Jalapeño" pepper rating, which is fine. What the "Well Yay!" title to this post is all about is the fact that I discovered that Another Dream is sitting at #9 on the best seller listing of all (currently 331) Jalapeño rated stories at Torquere.

So YAY! I don't know what that means in terms of sales numbers yet. Another Dream was released a week into the third quarter, and I expect to see the statement with those figures on it mid-October. I will be anxiously awaiting that report!

As for this weekend, I'll be heading to the boonies of Nebraska for one of the two days to visit in-laws and attend a "boonieville" county fair. Actually I love little fairs and festivals, so this promises to be a good time. Plus, I just looked up the weather forecast for that area and a low humidity, mostly sunny, mid-70s day sounds just absolutely perfect for that kind of thing. So yay!

As for next week, what I hope to accomplish is to get some expired short stories up on Lulu and Smashwords.

As I've previously reported, my Torquere contract for Born to Be Wild expired back on August 16. It disappeared from the TQ site at the end of August, although you can still get it (for who knows how much longer) at various distributor sites. Nonetheless, the rights are back in my hands, so I will be giving it another read-through and tweaking things based on what I've learned over the past year, making up a custom cover, and putting it up on the aforementioned sites.

My Torquere contract for Dropping Quarters expired on September 6. I expect it'll be down from their site by the end of the month. The only distributor that I know of that also carries this story is All Romance eBooks, and I don't know how long it will linger on there. Anyway, the rights to this story are also once again mine, so I will be doing the same with this story--another read-through with some tweaking, a custom cover, then up on Smashwords and Lulu.

The price I think I'll sell them at, considering how short they are (3500 & 4700 words), is $0.99. That seems reasonable.

My Torquere contract for Now and Forever also expired this month, on the 13th. Again, since no renewal request has arrived, I expect it will be down from the TQ site at the end of the month. To the best of my knowledge this story is not available on any distributor sites, so this may very well be your last chance to get this story for a while. I don't have any immediate plans to reupload this one. Perhaps early next year, though. As you're probably aware, all royalties for sales of this story are donated directly to Lamda Legal, so if you've been thinking of getting it, you might have one hour, you might have 1-1/2 weeks. I dunno.

Dreaming of You

The story behind the story: I actually finished writing Dreaming of You (essentially, anyway) back in January. It was meant, however, to be a longer story, around the same length as A Dream Come True and Another Dream, the first two stories in the "Dream" series. But the more I thought about where the story was going, the less I liked it. I remained blocked on what I would like to do instead of my original plan and eventually came to the realization that this was because the story was complete as it was. I did need to rework the end just a little bit to more effectively conclude things, and I had to delete an earlier scene that had no purpose other than to set up what was no longer going to happen, but otherwise it was best as it was. So, without further ado:

EXCERPT

Trevor’d opted to avoid the obvious holiday costuming so many of the revelers dancing at Snayque’s were wearing. A red t-shirt was good enough for him. Ragged jeans and a t-shirt. Jesus, he was practically a bum, but he’d found it hard to get motivated to glam up to his usual degree of immaculate turnout. Hell, he hadn’t even spiked or glittered his bleach-tipped blond hair.

He didn’t feel like cruising after all. He felt like sitting alone at the bar and drinking himself numb. He’d spent the day in lonely introspection and was disheartened by the realization that he was tired. Tired of cruising and tired of being alone.

There wasn’t a single soul in whom he’d feel comfortable confiding the fears that had nagged him all day. That, in and of itself, was near the top of the list of scary things he’d admitted to himself that day.

He had more acquaintances than he could count and more hookups in his history than he wanted to tally. There were several he called friends, but were they really? If he didn’t feel comfortable opening up and really talking about his hopes, dreams, and fears with someone, were they really a friend? Hell, he felt more comfortable talking with his co-workers than his so-called friends.

The pilsner in front of him was empty, and he signaled the barkeeper for another beer. A fresh glass was placed in front of him, but he didn’t get the chance to pick it up before his thoughts were interrupted by a voice that reflexively got his back up.

“Hey there.” The voice was irritatingly cheerful. “Trevor, isn’t it?”

“Fuck you, Quinn.”

Trevor didn’t bother turning to look at the man but could sense his continued presence. Fuck. Most men would know enough to leave someone the hell alone after a greeting like that, but not Quinn. Fuck no. Fucking cowboy just stood there.

Scratch that. He sat down on the next barstool.

“Well now, I guess I could take it as a good sign that you know my name.”

Christ. Trevor turned to level a scorching look at his new arch enemy. “And do you take the ‘fuck you’ as a good sign too—Quinn?”

Quinn had the audacity to look puzzled but grinned through it. “Was it a request?”

Trevor choked. And sputtered. Was Quinn obtuse? He certainly had some big hairy balls. “What are you, insane as well as a liar? Leave me the hell alone. You’ve done enough damage.”

Trevor turned back to his beer, determined to simply ignore Quinn until the man left. Except Quinn didn’t leave. He settled in with a beer of his own and then had the nerve to bring up the issue himself.

“So you have a thing for that Marty fella, don’t you?”

“Fuck off.”

“What, you don’t want to fuck me anymore?”

Christ. “Leave me the hell alone, Quinn.”

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Trevor, but Marty loves that Larry dude. Larry’s a nice enough little guy. They seem like a pretty sweet couple to me.”

That was too much. Trevor spun to face Quinn. “That why you made out with the little cheater in the restroom then lied to Marty about it?” Trevor felt his face heating up as his temper rose. “I accept now that Marty will never care for me like that, but he still deserves someone who’ll be true to him.” Trevor wanted that last sentence back as soon as it was out. What in the world had possessed him to admit that to fucking Quinn, of all people?

“I don’t lie, Trevor.” Quinn remained maddeningly calm. “I told Marty the truth about what happened with Larry.”

Yeah, right. That comment wasn’t even worth acknowledging. Trevor rolled his eyes and turned back to his beer.

“You wanna know what happened?”

No, just go away.

“I was cruisin’ last night and thought that little dude, Larry, was kinda sweet lookin’. I also thought he was alone. Ran into him on the way to the bathroom and put a move on him. Thought he was interested, but he’s just kinda green—inexperienced in the cruising scene. He didn’t realize I was gonna kiss him ’til I did. He pushed me away as soon as I started, but you walked in right at that moment.”

Shit. The little mouse did seem pretty naïve. Trevor didn’t say anything, still hoping Quinn would take the hint and leave him alone.

No such luck. Quinn continued. “So your timing sucked. I can see why you thought what you did, but it wasn’t like that. Poor little guy was practically hysterical and thought he’d get dumped. Figured the least I could do was explain things to his boyfriend and hope I wouldn’t get punched out for my efforts.”

Jesus, Quinn did have some big hairy balls. Trevor couldn’t think of a single one of his ‘friends’ who would have made that right. They’d have thought it was funny and left Larry to deal with the fallout himself.

Trevor sighed and stared at his glass as if the amber liquid in it was the most interesting thing he’d seen in years. “Guess that was nice of you then.”

“You thought you were doing the right thing too. You were wrong, but you thought you were saving your friend from a bad relationship choice.”

Had that been his motivation? Most people who knew him would’ve come up with a more selfish reason for his actions. Quinn was right, though. He’d already begun to accept that Marty had finally fallen for someone and that it wasn’t him.

There might have been a glimmer of hope Marty’d switch his affections to Trevor after ditching Larry, but mostly? Yeah, Trevor’d just wanted to make sure Marty didn’t get hurt more in the long run by continuing a relationship with someone who’d cheat on him.

Trevor shrugged his shoulders in reply. Something about Quinn made it easy to confide things he’d regret later, so he kept his mouth shut.

“You’re going about it all wrong, you know.”

Going about what all wrong? “Mind your own business, Quinn.”

“How’re you going to attract someone who loves you if you hide who you really are behind all that phony attitude?”

That was all Trevor could stand. He pushed his beer away, pissed because he was nowhere near numb yet, slapped some bills down on the bar, and left.

A Nice Review at the Obsidian Bookshelf

I was taking a break between cleaning bathrooms (it's my one "free" day this week--no babysitting of the step-gr-d, and no spending the day schlepping my mom around on her weekly outing with me), and I thought I'd Google my name along with the word "review" to see if anything popped up that I hadn't seen before (shut up--you know you do that too). Well, it paid off! I found a very favorable review of Cultivating Love by Val Kovalin on the Obsidian Bookshelf review blog.

Looking at the Bright Side

The bright side of my laptop being out for repair is that I've discovered/fixed a website issue that I hadn't known existed. I've been checking in on the desktop office computer. I'm using the Google Chrome browser on that computer and when I checked out my website I discovered that the fonts were rather wonky, changing both font face and size within a text entry. It looked fine on Firefox and IE, but I imagine Google Chrome users have been wondering what I was smoking when I made those entries. Anyway, I fixed the issue and now hopefully the site looks reasonable regardless of the browser being used.

I've now checked it over on Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. Are there any other big/popular browsers I should be using to check my site for wonkiness?

Laptop update: The online status of my repair ticket is that the laptop has been shipped back from the repair center to my local Best Buy. I should probably have it back within a few days. I have no idea at this point if everything is intact or if they had to wipe out my hard drive to fix it, but beyond the pain-in-the-butt factor of having to reload stuff, at least my data should be okay because I run a backup to a zip drive every morning at 9:00 AM.

Plans once I have the laptop back: (1) Complete a final read-through on Dreaming of You, and get it uploaded to Lulu.com. (2) Make another edit run through Born to Be Wild (TQ contract ran out on this one), make a new custom cover for it, and put it up on Lulu.com as well. I do plan on eventually putting together a collection of all of my short stories, but I've got until the end of November, 2010 before the current contracts run out on all of those, so in the meantime, as their contracts run out, I'll keep them available individually on Lulu.com.

A Dream Come True is a very nice book to sit down to. Not only does it have likable characters, but well meant messages that come across without hitting the reader over the head with them. The main message is, of course, love - that it comes in many forms and in many ways. The other (which fits in with the first) is family: how different members interact with each other, their expectations for and of each other, how expectations can shift with unexpected news and how they will (or at least they should) always be there. The contract for my Torquere Sip, Born to Be Wild has expired. It is no longer available on the Torquere Books website.
